Definition
The term "pragmatic" refers to people who are intelligent and practical. People who are pragmatic focus on what works in the real-world and don't get caught up in idealistic theories.
The word"pragmatic" is derived from Latin Praegere which translates to "to grasp." Pragmatism is a philosophical tradition that holds that understanding the world and agency are interdependent. William James characterized pragmatism as a new name for old ways of thinking in 1907 when he published his series of lectures entitled "Pragmatism: A New Name for Some Old Ways of Thinking." Origins
Around 1870, the term pragmatic was first used in the United States. In the final years of his career he began to see pragmatics as a part of the philosophy of democracy.
Recent pragmatists developed new areas of inquiry that include computational pragmatics (the study of computer systems which use context to better understand the intentions of their users) games-theoretical and experimental pragmatics, as well as neuropragmatics.
